Fancy-Shmancy Monograms

March 3, 2010

Designer Jessica Hirsche has an ongoing typography project where she publishes a new original-design letter each work day.

A few of our favorites:

3 things you could do with these pretty ditties:

  1. Print your last initial and frame in an arrangement between 2 wedding pictures.
  2. Print out the whole alphabet for your children’s room.
  3. Print monogram on transfer paper and iron on to tea towels for a wedding gift.

Find the whole collection right here.

Does anyone else just LOVE hearing stories about people trying creative social experiments? I found this video today and thought it was brilliant!

Check it out and let us know what you think! Would you take the stairs? Does this make you want to go watch “BIG”?

Found this video the other day at Portable Film Festival’s website… Thought it was crazy cool graphically… The song is great too, I was just really impressed with the graphics.

Check it out! Let us know what you think… a.k.a. Leave a comment below.

Found this the other day and was thoroughly impressed. This guy recreated Michael Jackson’s song “Thriller”… vocally. Pretty crazy.

Once > Beautiful

January 8, 2010

Have you ever seen a movie, heard a song/album, read a book, attended an art exhibit, etc… that you felt was SO incredibly, amazingly beautiful that you NEEDED to tell everyone you knew? And I don’t mean WANTED… I mean NEEDED… As if your life depended on it… Or maybe, better yet, you just KNEW their journey through life would be sadly lacking were they unable/unwilling to experience it…

Well I have. Actually, I think it happens to me a bit more than other people I know… I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because I have some obsessive tendencies. Who knows. What I do know is that there is SO much beauty in the world, and, for the health of our soul, we NEED to see it… Otherwise all we focus on is the ugliness. And who needs that?

Anyways, I say all of that to call attention to the elephant in the room which is my tendency to get really passionate about things. (My opinion is that that is not a bad thing… But that is for another conversation.) With all of that in mind, there is something that you NEED to see.

Last night I watched this movie called Once… again… I saw it a couple years ago when it first came out, and was completely blown away. And as I watched it again last night, I realized, this is seriously one of the best movies I have ever seen. I am not going to go into too many details here, because I seriously just want you to watch it. But I will tell a little of the story of how it was made.

The director had an idea for a movie that he wanted to do on a short budget… $100k. The original idea, I believe, was to make it and sell it concerts for the Irish rock band The Frames. (Great band… Check them out for sure.) Anyways, the lead singer from that band co-stars in the movie along side a female musician friend of his. And, WOW! It is an indescribably beautiful movie! They actually won an Oscar for Best Original Score or something like that… The music, which is mostly what the movie revolves around, is amazing!

OK, well I am going to shut up about it now.

But, before I go, I just want to stress again that this movie is one you absolutely NEED to see.

If you have seen the movie please leave us a comment saying what you thought!
And, if you watch the movie, PLEASE come back and let us know what you think!

I might go watch it again right now…
P.S. The actors/musicians from the movie have formed a band called The Swell Season and have release 2 albums. Both are amazing and well worth the money.

For those of you that follow us on Twitter, you will be familiar with this. BUT, by all means, keep reading!

First, can we all just admit that the genre of Christmas/Holiday music is rather scant when it comes to good music?

I mean, sure… There’s nothing quite like listening to Sinatra croon Frosty The Snowman or Nat King Cole sing The Christmas Song while decorating the tree… And the first couple times I hear Paul McCartney’s “Simply having a wonderful Christmas time” I get fuzzy, warm feelings confirming that Christmas is near.

BUT, while I’m driving around town, I’d much rather listen to Radiohead’s Kid A or U2’s Joshua Tree than Sinatra’s or Cole’s holiday tunes… And concerning the McCartney Christmas song, to quote a recent tweet from Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrutte from The Office), after a while it “makes me want to kill and eat a raw, bloody reindeer on his lawn.”

Maybe that’s a bit over the top, but I understand the sentiment behind it: with very few exceptions (that I am aware of) Christmas music is usually only listened to out of nostalgia, not for quality/depth/importance/etc…

A friend sent me an invite to get some new, FREE, Christmas music. I was skeptical at first, but checked it out because this friend usually has pretty good taste in music. Until now, my Christmas music playlist was pretty much just the Sufjan Stevens Christmas albums. (If you don’t have them, believe me, you NEED them.) They are so good that I would have to stop myself from listening to them throughout the rest of the year… Especially when Fall arrives…

Anyways, the name of the band is Sojourn. And yes, they were giving away the album for free.
The deal was:
A. Give them 5 email addresses of family or friends that they could send the same invite to.
or
B. Pay what you want for the album (a lá Radiohead for the release of In Rainbows)

I have listened to the album several times since then and I must say, I am REALLY impressed! This is great music! It is holiday music without the kitsch. I especially love the intro to Joy To The World… It’s very….. Celestial… or Glacial… Maybe both. I can’t decide. Point is, it’s great!

I get the feeling that I will have to stop myself from listening to this throughout the rest of the year too.

Here is the link for you to get the album… Hope you enjoy! When you give the album a listen, come back and let me know your thoughts on it. I would love to see what other people think!

One (super cool) eskimO!

December 7, 2009

So, I was hanging out with a friend at Starbucks a few weeks ago. As I was stirring in my sugar I noticed they were in the middle of changing out their “Discovery Download” cards and had a bunch of them laying out. So I sifted through them to see if there were any that looked interesting. There was one for The Avett Brothers, but I already had the album… There were a few others that I had already checked out or didn’t grab my attention, but there was one that caught my eye… It was a video download for what seemed to be a cartoon. So I tucked it in my wallet and forgot about it, until today, when I decided to purge my wallet of all the useless receipts that I keep for no reason.

I downloaded and watched the video… And I was IMMEDIATELY blown away! It is a beautiful story that I am not going to ruin by trying to explain here, because believe me, you need to just watch it.

Apparently, the music is from a band in England (named One eskimO) that wrote/recorded this album and someone wrote a cartoon episode for each song… So, I finished watching the video and went on iTunes and immediately bought and downloaded the rest of the episodes. Seriously, they are incredible! You can get all 10 episodes for $8… That’s right $8.

Do yourself a favor and get them… You will NOT be disappointed!

I always used to think to myself “I know I am going to get stuck next to THAT kid on this plane ride”.  Usually THAT kid was the one running around the waiting area with some sort of strange green junk hanging from his nose while screaming at his mom because he’s out of Cheerios.  Yeah, you know…THAT kid.  Like I said, I always used to think that.  I now have a 2.5 year old and a 6 month old and I finally see the horror and disgust in other’s faces at a restaurant or library or, worst of all, plane rides.  Now, I’ve found that should try not to make eye contact and apologize when necessary:)

Well, this kid defies all that…Josh Johnson shot this whole movie with the same STILL camera I use and he did it from one seat on a plane.  I was totally sucked in when I saw this.   Enjoy!

A friend of mine passed this along.  It is amazing!  And it’s not even the official music video for this song.  I am blown away.

Coffee

As I sit here drinking my iced coffee drink and waiting for a client I am counting the hours a week that I spend in coffee shops like this one.  It’s a lot.  It got me thinking, “I should do a quick run down of all the coffee houses I’ve found in the city that I love to hang out and meet clients in.  So that’s what I am doing…

These are not in any kind of order…I have some favorites but for the most part they are all pretty equal.

  1. Bean Haus – Covington, KY – The amtosphere and location couldn’t be any better.  It’s right on Main St. in Mainstrasse and the coffee is fantastic!
  2. Rohs St. Cafe – Clifton – It’s a coffee shop for college students (not old people like me) so the parking is almost no existent.  Most of their business comes from walk-ins so they really don’t need parking.  The decor and atmosphere is right on and the coffee is made with a little extra love!
  3. Heaven’s Roast – Loveland, OH – It’s definitely a little more suburban and smaller but hip nonetheless.  I totally expected a S_____bucks knockoff when I went there for the first time but it won me over with good coffee, music and free WIFI.
  4. Speckled Bird Cafe – Norwood – This place is artsy, eclectic and independent.  I love the vibe in there.  If only they had longer hours.
  5. Coffee Emporium – Downtown/OTR – There are other locations but the downtown version is the best.  It’s a half floor down from the street which offers a pretty cool vibe.  I love what they’ve done to renovate it and make it more customer friendly.  Great place!
  6. Red Tree Gallery - Oakley – I’m partial to this one because it’s in my neighborhood.  It’s an art gallery and a coffee shop so there is always a new exhibit to get lost in.  They serve some great food, great coffee and there are plenty of place to hang out and check email or talk.  I always leave  wanting to go back.

There are plenty of others, but these are my most frequented.  What have I missed?  I am trying to come up with a list of places to meet clients in every part of the city.  My criteria is 1. Artsy 2. Independent 3. Great Atmosphere and of course 4. Free WIFI.

Feel free to suggest any places you know of.
