Fyrefly has done a fair share of newborn and baby shoots. But I recently came across three photographers with a whole new take on snapping baby shots. These are more conceptual shoots, but the thing they have in common is they capture such emotion on these little baby faces. Little miniature human emotions…

These are by Edward Mapplethorpe- instant heart melting. He only takes pictures of the babies on or near their first birthday, and then he only shows the parents a couple shots to choose from. Brilliant.

Bettina Von Zwehl did a series of all baby profiles. I would love to sit in on a shoot like this and see just how you get them to stare at one thing long enough to snap the perfect profile.

These are from Thierry Bouet’s series of 50 newborns in their very first hours. They all looked a little freaked out upon entering the world. How come the ones they take at the hospital never come out this great?

(All three found at the lovely Cup of Jo.)

Hamilton, OH | When I started Fyrefly Lindsay, Noah and Grayson were some of the first family portraits I ever shot.  I must have done an ok job because when little Olivia was born Lindsay asked me to come take pictures of her:)

She is so precious!  I love it when newborns sleep anywhere you put them, it makes for some cute pictures.  I recently found a miniature Radio Flyer wagon at a thrift store and this was my first chance to use it.  As you can see, it is the perfect size for a tiny baby.  It was really fun hanging out with the family again…thanks for everything you guys!

Here are some of my favorites from the day:

I absolutely love children’s photography sessions.  I especially love them when I get to take pictures of some of my best friend’s kids!  Brandt and Jessica are dear friends that we don’t get to see as often as we used to (if no one has told you yet: “having a baby changes everything!”) but I still love watching Campbell grow up from afar.  It’s even better when I can take some pictures to help add to their albums and walls.

This kids portrait session took me back to Old Loveland…my family used to live right down the road so it’s always great to drive through the neighborhood and see the old sights:)  It was a beautiful day filled with beautiful smiles and some funny faces by Campbell!  She is such a cutie.

I love these painted butterflies at the Loveland Bike Trail.  I always thought they’d make for a cute backdrop…turns out I was right!

Some people will disagree but, in my opinion, there is no better picture than a classic black and white portrait.

Those bubbles make this pictures:)

Baby photography is super fun when they are as cute as this little one.  Thanks Brandt and Jess for letting me hang out with Campbell for a couple hours.  I can’t wait to show you the rest!

Who knows what the future holds for this adventure?  Not me.  If you had of told me when it started that this thing called Fyrefly would be where it is in such a short time I would have quickly told you that you were on an illegal substance.  Sometimes when you dream you think “but that’s just a dream, it could never happen”.  What a dumb thing to think…if you are dreaming with no belief that it might be possible, then what’s the point?  Self-torture?

I am learning to dream and then sit down and figure out what it would take to make my dreams a reality.  There is so much more in store for this adventure…for now let’s call my mood “pleased, not satisfied”.  I am still chasing my dreams because I’m afraid if I stop something else will catch me from behind.

In honor of my nostalgic mood I went through and picked my favorite photo from every one of my shoots over the last 6 months, 22 in all.  I exported these in small files so they wouldn’t take long to upload.  So if you watch them on full screen they will be insanely pixelated.  I thought about telling you why each one is a favorite but that would have made this post longer than any human would ever read, even my mom:)

Wow, what a cute little girl!  She was adorable and fun to take pictures of.  We had an outdoor shoot scheduled at Eden Park in Mt. Adams but the crazy weather forced us under the gazebo.  Sophia made the best of it as she played with her giraffe and mostly just looked perfect for the camera!  Melissa and James: you are lucky parents!  Can’t wait to show you the rest in a couple days...

Too cute!

The eyes are to die for!

It’s a pretty cool experience when you get confirmation that the hard work you put in to serving your clients does not go unnoticed.  I received a Facebook message the other day that gave me some warm fuzzies inside:)  I thought I’d toot our own horn just a tad:

Facebook message:

I also got a call from the hospital photography place. They said that since I got pictures in the hospital I also paid for them to come to my home for free and then give me a free 8×10 of Jerynn. But they also said we could do some with both girls.  Having already had you come to do the pictures for the girls and for us that is what I was comparing her to.  Let me just say her services cannot compare to yours.  She was not the friendliest person and Jaya cried almost the whole time.  She showed me a few of the pictures she took and they were good but then she said that she would be back next week to show them to me.  I asked if I could look at them online and she said she had to come and show them to me in my home on a laptop…annoying.  I know I told you I appreciated your work and your services but I wanted to tell you again that your approach to photography is awesome! Thanks again for all you did for our family and I look forward to doing some more when Jerynn is a little bigger!

Thanks Myndee!  That made my day, week and month:)
