Oakley | Cincinnati, OH I have been dying to do an engagement session in Oakley and I finally got my chance.  I live among all these wonderful picture spots but I have never had the chance to take anyone’s picture here.  When Ian and Nick said they were open to suggestions I quickly said “OAKLEY!”

I met Ian and Nick when they won a free engagement session in a contest I sponsored by Aviva Events.  We sat down to talk about their wedding and we immediately knew we were a great fit for each other and they decided to book Fyrefly for their wedding too:)  I have so much to say about how great they are but I want to leave room for an incredible story that Ian told me while on our walk.  If you can, take a minute to read her story below the pictures.

First, some of my favorites from our time together:

And here is the story about Ian’s grandmother:

“My grandmother was Hungarian.  When she was 8 or 9, her family fled Budapest and headed towards a smaller town where they owned a farm.  A few years after that, as the war situation got worse, they fled the small town and lived in a cave in the woods and a barn’s hay loft for about 3 years.  My grandma told me that she remembers wearing out the soles of her shoes on her walk out of the small town and that the German planes bombed the people as they were leaving.   She laughed when she told me about how her mother threw her into a ditch and opened a red umbrella above them in an attempt to protect them from the bullets and bombs.  It was also during this exodus that her brother was captured by the Germans and forced to join their army.

Along with her family, my grandmother eventually made her way to a displaced persons camp near Austria. Their her family enjoyed many freedoms as her mother and grandmother were nurses and her grandfather was a doctor.  One of the freedoms my grandmother enjoyed most was being able to visit the Austrian library and that is where she met my grandfather, who was a professor and 25 years older than her.  She was about 16 or 17 at that time.

Grandma caught Tuberculosis while in the camp and had to stay for an extra year until she was healthy enough, and cleared to leave.  She and her mother sailed across the ocean to New York where my grandfather met my grandmother with a huge bouquet of roses.

My Great-Grandmother would not let my grandmother marry until she was 21.  So, for 4 years, my grandfather patiently courted my grandma.  According to the stories my grandmother told me, her grandmother had to chaperon her dates!  Grandma would tell me, “She’d make sure to take her time, “smelling the roses” so that we had a little time to neck.”

Finally, in 1952, my grandmother and grandfather were married. They honeymooned in New York, where my grandfather bought my grandmother the skirt I wore for our engagement pictures.  On the way home from their honeymoon, they were in a bad car accident.  The doctors told my grandmother she’d never be able to have children.  Five years later, she had my mom.  A few years after that, my uncle.”

Sadly, my grandfather died from radiation exposure in 1962.  He was an engineer and was exposed while inspecting a plant up near Sandusky, Ohio.  My grandma later remarried.  By the time she passed, my grandmother had buried both of her husbands and her youngest son.  Of my four grandparents, I was closest to my grandmother.  This past March, with her family surrounding her, she quietly passed away.  My greatest hope for my marriage is that I am able to love Nick as unconditionally as my grandmother loved her first husband before and after he passed.”

Devou Park | Covington, KY  It always fun when a couple shows up to an engagement session and the guys says, “Just to warn you, I hate to smile”.  That was one of Nick’s first statements to me when he got out of the car on Thursday. Come to find out Nick just meant he hates to fake smile for posey pictures.  Lucky for the both of us: I hate posey smiles too!

Nick and Jami were so fun to be around as we trekked around Devou Park.  They were even good sports when I got us a little lost on the way back:)  I love the way the make each other laugh and I think you can really see their love for each other in these pictures.  Thanks for spending the evening with me and trusting me when I said, “I think it’s just around this corner”.

Canton, OH | From the first few minutes that I met Alison and Will at their engagement session back in August I knew that I was going to love getting to know them.  They are the kind of couple that can make you feel like you’ve known them forever from the second you meet.  They’re funny, sweet and as you can see, they look great in front of a camera!

When I talk about this wedding I feel like I am talking about a scene from a movie but I was really there!  They decided to have their wedding in the house Alison grew up in.  It’s a hundred year old English Tutor with so many little nooks and crannies.  I was there for 10 hours and I’m not sure I even saw it all:)  The ceremony was held in their parlor and the reception was held in a huge tent in the backyard.  The details were so well thought out and executed but most importantly, everything fit Alison and Will perfectly!  A few of my favorite details: Alison’s dress and necklace, the guy’s suits, the Converse low tops, the bridesmaids dresses, Dodger the four legged groomsman, the branchelier (branch chandelier), the UNBELIEVABLE floral arrangements and the house as a perfect canvas for it all!

My other favorite part of this wedding was working with Heidi Baumgart from Heidzillas.  She was amazing!  If you are looking for a phenomenal wedding planner, day of coordinator or consultant and you are getting married anywhere near Cleveland PLEASE give her a call…your wedding will thank you:)

Here are some of my favorites from the day: (My friend and second shooter Nick grabbed the top left shot in spread #3, the bottom right shot in spread #5 and the top left/bottom right shots in spread #7)

Cincinnati Club | Cincinnati, OH I loved this wedding!  From the minute I met Fahema for the first time I knew that this was going to be a super fun wedding to photograph.  Her style, attention to detail and great personality made for some exciting pictures.

The wedding day started off like any other with me showing up while the brides and bridesmaids were getting ready.  We got lots of great shots of all the little details as you can see below.  The twist to this day happened when Fahema got a call right about the time that we were supposed to go out to do their portraits that Greg was more than just a little sick:(  I’ll spare you the details but basically he couldn’t make it out of the bathroom to even put on his suit.  They made the decision to postpone any pictures with Greg until after the ceremony in hopes that Greg just needed some rest.  As the ceremony got closer, it was evident that Greg was going to need a miracle in order to stand at the altar so a friend of a friend prescribed Greg a pretty potent anti-nausea medicine.  We were told its the same medicine that they give Chemo patients after treatment!  About a half -hour before the ceremony Greg walks in to the “Green Room” to cheers and the day was saved:)

We did get a chance to cram in a few shots with Greg after the ceremony and he even hung around for most of the reception.  He was a trooper.  I loved watching the will power he had to be a part of his wedding and have fun in spite of feeling like he was going to pass out.  There were numerous times he would go to the dance floor with Fahema, get his dance on like nothing was wrong and then go to a table and lay his head down:(

It turned out to be a really fun day in spite of a lot of obstacles.  It’s amazing how smooth everything was considering Fahema thought she might be getting married to Greg over the phone in front of everyone!  Fahema is fantastic…energy, sass and a huge heart!  Greg showed what lengths he is willing to go to make sure that Fahema is taken care of.  In a weird way, what a great start to a marriage.  They are a wonderful couple and I can’t wait to grab coffee or dinner next time they are both in town (They are moving to Brooklyn, then Philly after their honeymoon).  I love them.

Also, let me say to the Motz’s and the Rahman’s:  your families are beautiful and you treated me like one of you the whole weekend.  I was so impressed by your hospitality and spirit that I was truly sad to leave when the wedding was over…so I went to the after party:)    I often quote the famous song by the Beatles by ending my posts or email with “All you need is love (Ba ba bada da)”  I do it because I truly believe that love is a special thing that we don’t see enough of in life.  You guys demonstrated love to me and for that I am thankful!

Devou Park | Covington, Kentucky I absolutely love engagement photography sessions!  For a couple of hours I get a chance to hang out with couples who love each other enough to want to spend the rest of their life together.  Devou Park is an amazing Cincinnati icon (even though its in Northern Kentucky) and it was a beautiful night for pictures.

It’s true, there is something special and unique about professional photographs.  The light, the editing, the framing of the shot…if you find the right photographer they can create a moment that you didn’t even know was there.

But what about everyday photography?  Can it be special too?  People often say things to me like “I could never get the same kind of shot you get” or “I’m lucky to get a shot that doesn’t have my finger in it!”.  Are you one of those people who thinks they have the shot nailed when they are taking it, then you look at the back of the camera and it just didn’t turn out that way?  You aren’t alone.

Here are 3 simple tips you can use to make your photographs a little better each time you are out:

  1. Eliminate distractions. One mistake people make is trying to get all the action in the picture.  Photography is more about eliminating distractions in a scene than it is about getting as much as you can in one shot.  Find a point of interest and try to set up the shot to compliment that one thing.
  2. Be ready. This one especially applies to children.  You have to have the camera ready to go when you want to get the shot.  Make sure you are on the mode you want and that you are zoomed appropriately before the moment happens.  I try to show up 15-30 minutes early for shoots just to get all my settings and equipment exactly how I want them BEFORE the client shows up.  Obviously you won’t do this with your family but it illustrates the importance of being ready for the shot.  There have been times when the sweetest moment of the shoot is when the family is getting out of the car and getting ready to get their picture taken.  If I wasn’t prepared I would miss those all together.
  3. Be a composer. I know this sounds weird when talking about photography, but it is so important.  In photography there is a rule that works pretty well…it’s called the “Rule of Thirds”.  Envision that your photograph is broken up into three sections from left to right and three sections from top to bottom.  All in all, there are 9 squares that are created when you do this.  Most of the time your point interest should come at or close to the cross section of two of these lines.  Don’t worry, there’s a picture below for the visual learners like me:)

Here is a couple of examples that illustrate all three of these tips.  Both pictures are from a trip I took with some friends to Africa.  Both were taken with a point and shoot.  I chose these shots because one is an “in the moment” shot and one is a scenic shot and both were taken with an inexpensive camera.  Basically, I chose them to show you that YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

thirds exampleThe photograph above was taken while on safari.  There was tons of stuff in that area that I could have included in this shot but I thought the simplicity of the bird and the dead tree was plenty.   Also, the point of interest (the bird) is in the vicinity of the crossing of the far right “third line” and the top “third line”.

thirds example2This photograph was taken on the way to the safari.  We were in the middle of the African plains when we got not 1 but 2 flat tires (and then another 2 on the way back!).  As you can see, while everyone else was working I was snapping away…I didn’t say being a photographer was going to make you any friends:)  The point of interest is at the bottom left of the photograph near the crossing of the left third line and the bottom third line.   If you look at the photograph, 6-7 “squares” are without any interesting content but they allow you eye to move right to the point of interest.

There are plenty of other little tips and rules to help make you a better photographer but these are pretty easy to pick up and implement.  Maybe next week we’ll explore 3 more.

*If you really want to learn how to a better amateur photographer I have a friend and brilliant photographer who leads an online workshop for just such a thing.  I’m sure she would love to have you in her next open seat!  Check out 503 Photography‘s “Wannabe Workshop” (I don’t know if that’s really the name, just sounded good).

Who knows what the future holds for this adventure?  Not me.  If you had of told me when it started that this thing called Fyrefly would be where it is in such a short time I would have quickly told you that you were on an illegal substance.  Sometimes when you dream you think “but that’s just a dream, it could never happen”.  What a dumb thing to think…if you are dreaming with no belief that it might be possible, then what’s the point?  Self-torture?

I am learning to dream and then sit down and figure out what it would take to make my dreams a reality.  There is so much more in store for this adventure…for now let’s call my mood “pleased, not satisfied”.  I am still chasing my dreams because I’m afraid if I stop something else will catch me from behind.

In honor of my nostalgic mood I went through and picked my favorite photo from every one of my shoots over the last 6 months, 22 in all.  I exported these in small files so they wouldn’t take long to upload.  So if you watch them on full screen they will be insanely pixelated.  I thought about telling you why each one is a favorite but that would have made this post longer than any human would ever read, even my mom:)

I just had a meeting with Fahema regarding her wedding in January. She is a brilliant and fun girl and I really hope I get the chance to do her wedding. What an amazing opportunity to get to know some really cool people.

Thanks for the time Fahema and good luck with your wedding planning:)

I’ve been editing for about 2 weeks straight on the 2 weddings and 1 family session I had recently.  It’s great to finally be done with all of them!  The last batch of photos went out to Cayla and Landon today.  I hope everyone loves their shots as much as I do!

Here’s what I am listening to this week:

Since 500+ pictures takes so crazy long to upload I am going to put up a second sneak peek for Cayla and Landon.  Thanks for your patience guys!  They will be ready in a few days.
